Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty

Coronary angiography and angioplasty refer to the two different procedures. They are linked to the blood vessels. While angiography is the diagnostic test used to examine or investigate the blood vessels to detect any underlying heart problems, angioplasty is the treatment suggested to widen the narrowed artery and treat the underlying problem.

During angiography, a cardiologist examines the arterial blood vessels closely to detect any blockages causing problems to the blood circulation. The doctor injects a special dye through the artery of your arm or groin region using a catheter or fine tube. The dye, also known as contrast medium can provide images or reading known as angiogram to highlight potential problems. The doctor takes x-rays to determine the next course of action.

When the doctor detects the blockage in the blood vessels, they may suggest angioplasty. It is the procedure used to clear the blocks without undergoing major surgery. During angioplasty, the cardiologist places a tiny tube or catheter through the block and inflates the special balloon on the catheter. The doctor uses water pressure higher than blood pressure to relieving the block for facilitating proper blood flow.
